All About Horror Movies

From time to time, we see so many horror movies come and go. Spooky, haunted houses, serial killers, slashers, maniacs, mentals, satanic and many others have been pictured in the movie. A lot of sub genres, a lot of remakes, a lot of variations, twist and all that can easily be found through the ages. Yeah, it’s all true. But have we ever thought where it all came from?
Or how does the horror movies genre change from time to time?

For you who share the same passion about horror movies, and want to know the road that have been travelled by Horror movies, allow me to have the honor to be your guide. Buckle up, here we go.

Where It All Began

The year was 1922, place: German. I can say that it was the birth of horror movies. W Murnau started the terror and fear through Nosferatu, nosferatuthe
story about bloodsucking vampire. It wasn’t the first vampire movie, as in 1896 Georges Melies made Le Castle Du Diable, but Nosferatu was the first movie where we saw vampire destroyed by sunlight. This one boasted remarkable animalistic makeup that has not been replicated, even with modern
technology. Dozens of vampire movies followed after that. In 1931 Universal Studio launched 2 legendary horror movies, Dracula with Bela Lugosi and Frankenstein with Boris Karloff. Both of the movie became a classic and very successful. Boris Karloff even became a legendary name in horror movies history. The Mummy (1932) a silent picture with horror icon Boris Karloff in the title role, remains a classic, with unforgettable make-up and atmosphere. In 1935, the sequel of Frankenstein,
The Bride Of Frankenstein was made. This isn’t silent anymore.

Psycho

During 40’s the world’s on war, and it has changed the genre. Horror was almost forgotten as patriotic movies and war has taken the place. It slowly raised again around 50’s, where comedy and musical movies ruled. There were good ones took place at this time, House of Wax is one of the example. 1960 was the time for Hitchcock to make a memorable movie: Psycho. Too bad, this is the only horror movie by Hitchcock, cuz then he made lots of suspence thriller goodies like Rear Window, Vertigo,North by Northwest,Dial M For Murder that kinda changed the genre again. And remember, spaghetti western Movies in the late 60’s also had its moment.

The 70’s

This is the most creative year of Horror movies.Unlike before, horror movies got big exploration, where so many variation of story and evil came in. Note there were lots of controversy and protest happened here. The Exorcist (1973) for example showed disgusting scenes that never been imagined before, like the green puke to the face transformed to evil. This movie was controversial when Catholic Church protested that the demon cast-out in the movie was against the code of conduct. The shining, that based on Stephen King’s novel was one of the best one during 70’s. Later on from this decade to 80s and 90s, lots of movies was made based on his scary novel such as Carrie, Christine, Cujo, It, , Cat’s Eye, Dream Catcher, are the example. Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) was a low budget movie that reached a great result. This one introduced “the slasher movie” to the world that later followed by Halloween (say hi to Michael Myers) , Friday the 13th, Scream in the 80’s and 90’s and so on. Omen is a bonechillin’ movie that can still give
you nightmare even with today’s technology of making movie.Simply unforgettable. Amityville Horror, based on the true story was the first movie that took place in the actual location. The report said a lot of bizarre and dreadful things were experienced by cast and crew in location.

The 80’s

Freddie Kruger

This is the decade of madness. All gory stuff were shown sadistically for viewing. cutted off body parts were seen everywhere. Nightmare on Elm Street that launched Freddy Krueger to horror hall of fame, and Jason Voorheyes slashing games in Friday the 13th are one of the example. These two had some of their sequels during 80s, together with 3 of Halloweens. And remember how Italian horror movies that have a very sick super bloody vision? Count Romero and Argento for this category. This is also the era where horror expanded to tv.

The 90’s

Funny thing happened in 90s. There’s a tendency of self defense and self actualization by horror character on terror they have made to people. For example Ghost, Bram Stocker’s Dracula that told the story about Count
Dracula’s painful love to Mina, or Interview With Vampires that unlocked the mystery of vampire lives. Scream started a new genre, teen horror movies, slashing-serial-killer-who-did-it,which soon followed by I Know What You Did Last Summer, Urban Legend, and some more. A note in 1999, an independent movie Blair Witch Project became a big phenomena, using a documentation technique to give us fear, tense and mental disturbance. This one inspired some other movies like St.Francisville Experiment, The Lamarie Project and
tv series Freaky Links.

2000’s

Ringu

Still too early maybe to talk about horror movies in 2000s, but looks like Hollywood has running out of ideas. They are trying to widen up their view to see new ideas outside that can give new vision on the term of horror. The Ring, remake from Japanese movie was their first success. Followed by The eye, and some other remakes from Asian cinemas.

This decade seems being led by Japan and Korea, by making so many horror movies with lack of effects or gory blood but still successfully tortured our feeling. They don’t go with the Hollywood pattern, they just dig everything else that hasn’t been touched yet. Thailand is also emerging as a good horror maker. Indonesian movies too, with amusing number of horror movies every year. We also mark the decade 2000 for the decade of sequels and remakes too, such as Halloween H2O, Freddy vs Jason, modern version of Bram Stocker’s Dracula, Dracula 2001,
Halloween Resurrection, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre , House of The Dead, The Amityville Horror and so on.

While the effort to combine some genres and produce something new has still been going on. Saw for example, combine the psycho thriller ala Hitchkock with slasher, sadistic, bloody and graphic scenes.

My prediction? I think this decade will continue to do so. Hopefully in the next decade we will see some new approach, style and way to present horror movies. Let’s wait and see where the horror movies continue their path.

How To Get Movies For Free

Although the aroma of fresh popped popcorn and a darkened theater with a towering wide screen lures us to new released films, most of us still view far more movies at home than at the theater. With the introduction of online movie rental and movie downloads nearly ten years ago, the selections offered by the local video store are not the only options viewers have for their home entertainment.

Aside from the improved affordability, movie fans enjoy watching movies at home because of convenience. With busy lives that keeps us at work and on the road, time spent relaxing at home is at a premium and any service that allows us to enjoy that time without additional complexity or effort is highly prized. With this in mind, which of these movie services provides the most value for the home viewer?

Traditional video stores can be convenient for some last minute movie picks; or at least convenient if a person lives within a few blocks of the store. If someone suddenly decides at 5:30 pm. that there is time to squeeze in a showing of the most recent Harry Potter flick with the kids, then it is certainly easy to get to and from the store and be ready to view within a half an hour. This assumes of course that the store will have a copy of the DVD available in house at the time it is being sought.

If Harry isn’t at the local video store, then browsing through the remaining films and examining the DVD cases may provide a hint as to what the family might enjoy. After the movie, the viewer will then have at least a couple of days to shuttle back to the store and return the movie before incurring any late fees.

Movie downloads are one of the newer options. Certainly, downloading a movie can allow viewers to decide at the last minute to view Harry Potter, or some other movie, as well. Just a quick 5 minute visit to the download site on line to select and initiate the download allows viewers to remain at home throughout the process. Most films require approximately an hour to download depending upon connection speed. The good news however is that many movie downloads are capable of allowing viewers to begin watching the movie only a matter of minutes into the download process.

There is no worry about returning rented movies that are downloaded or any late fees. Upon download, viewers have a specified period of time in which to watch the movie before it expires. Movielink for example allows movies to be stored for up to 30 days. Perhaps the one drawback for many movie downloads is that they often must be viewed on a PC rather than a television unless viewers have a connection between their PC and TV. The future however, may provide greater flexibility as legal movie download services may be better positioned to allow burning movies to DVD as some of the digital rights management issues are being addressed with movie studios.

Online movie rental services can certainly ease the process of selecting and obtaining movies. Users can go online and select from over 75,000 titles, nearly five times the number of titles offered in a local video store. Here users can create a list of movies in advance that will automatically arrive at their door. Movies requested generally arrive within 1 to 2 business days after they are requested. Users merely stick the DVDs in an envelope for the mailman to pick up when they are ready to return them; and only when they are ready to return them. There are no due dates and no late fees either. The most evident drawback to this system is for those viewers who don’t decide they have the time to view a movie until earlier that same day. Mail delivery does not allow such last minute decisions.

Online movie rental services are evolving however to better accommodate those last minute choices. Netflix, the largest online movie rental service, announced in early 2007 their service can now provide a “Watch Now” feature which allows customers to stream movies directly to their PC rather than waiting for the DVD in the mail. Although not all movie titles are available for streaming at this time, it does provide a potential solution for the occasional last minute movie craving.

One of the final conveniences of online movie rental is that the sheer number of movies offered makes it more likely that a movie of choice will be available. In situations where viewers aren’t sure what they want to see, the Netflix service is even able to provide recommendations based on the comments and ratings of other viewers and the actual viewing pattern of the user. The accuracy of the Netflix recommendations has been applauded within the industry and certainly offers a better option than merely reviewing the information provided by production studios on the sleeves of a DVD.

Each movie service offers different convenience advantages for home movie viewers. Determining whether movie downloads, online movie rental, or use of the local video store is best, may be dependent upon the preferred viewing patterns of a user and their access to a computer or the proximity of a local video store.

It is for those who prefer the highest quality of both video and audio. DivX’s stereo sound and high resolution can satisfy the requirements of most PCs, laptops and TVs. This version is smaller in size and it will take you much less time to download a movie. This version is the most popular one because it’s space-saving, yet good enough in terms of quality.

The PDA version is designed for portable digital devices. (yes, you can use those, too!) Its resolution and sound are optimized for these portable devices and the size of the file is even smaller then for a DivX.

Tips To Learn From Movies

Movies are everywhere.

Their stories, phrases, and scenes are a part of our culture.

We all have favorite movies, favorite memories relating to movies, and in some cases movies that help us define our lives. While you may not think about it, movies have probably enriched your life.

Movies are stories told in a rich medium. Stories are how we make sense of the world. They hold tremendous power to surprise and delight; to affect in ways far beyond entertainment. Stories, well told on film, can affect our views of ourselves and alter our perspectives of our world. Stories, without question, have made our lives better.

Learning is one of the most important parts of life. In fact, the ability to learn in a multitude of ways is one of our most human qualities. We learn best when we are immersed in a situation, actively involved in the learning process. Movies can help us learn because they wrap us up in a story. If you’ve ever jumped or screamed or cried during a movie, you’ve experienced the power of film.

While most think of movies as entertainment, a diversion or an escape because of their very nature they can be much more than that. As the previous paragraphs show, they likely already have become a source of learning in your life.

The rest of this article will provide you with three specific ways you can consciously use movies to drive your learning and enrich your life:

Asking Reflective Questions

oExploring Your Mental Filters

oCreating Group Conversation

oAsking Reflective Questions

There are some general questions that can be helpful when reviewing a movie – whether to reflect personally or to spark a conversation. These questions can be used with any movie and can be, by themselves, the foundation of meaningful learning opportunities. These core questions include:

oWhat was/were your favorite scene(s) and why?

oWhat did you like/dislike about the movie and why?

oIf you’ve seen the movie before, how was your experience of the movie different from past viewing(s)? What struck you the same or differently?

o What scenes made you laugh or cry (if appropriate)? Why?

o Which characters, if any, do you identify with in some way?

o What about this movie or story reminds you of your life experiences?

o What if anything will you do differently, or think about differently, since watching the movie?

o What insight do you gain from this movie?

o What in this movie inspires you?

Exploring Your Mental Filters

Your state of mind, current thoughts, and life experiences all play a part in how you “see” a movie.

This is one reason why you can watch a movie twice, even if only a few days apart, and have a very different experience. Your mental filters are the reason why you may experience a movie differently on different viewings.

Some of your filters are life-long, based on your values, early experiences and deeply held beliefs. For example, people who grew up in India will have a different perspective and therefore view the movie Gandhi much differently than Americans will. Different filters are largely the reasons for these distinct perspectives.

Other filters are related to more recent events and the various roles you are playing in your life at that time. If you saw The Sound of Music after recently being widowed, your reaction to Captain von Trapp might be different than in previous viewing of this movie. These more recent filters are the main causes of unique experiences during various viewings of the same film.

The question “If you’ve seen the movie before, how was your experience of the movie different from past viewing(s)? What struck you the same or differently?” is included to help you examine your filters. Often by thinking about these filters, movies can help you reflect your own growth and change over time, as well as how current situations are shaping you.

Creating Group Conversation

While you can do the first two tasks by yourself, I’m guessing you often watch movies with other people, so it’s natural to consider having a conversation with others about a movie.

Of course, this happens naturally already, either with the people you watched the movie with or around the coffee pot when you all realize you’ve all seen the same movie.

Since conversations about movies are natural, all I am suggesting is that you consciously extend and/or facilitate the discussion so that everyone can take lessons and insights for their own lives from the fiction you’ve experienced on film.

This may be as simple as you interjecting questions from the reflective question list into the normal movie banter, or it might be even more intentional where people agree ahead of time to extend the entertainment of the movie into the education that can be derived from it. Either way, everyone wins!

In the second case, if you are leading the conversation, the best way to begin is to simply tell people that the goal is to learn from the experience of the movie. Let them know that you want this to be fun, and encourage them to really listen to each other.

Encourage them to approach the conversation with a spirit of inquiry, not of debate. Conversations usually aren’t very fulfilling when everyone has the same opinion, so encourage people to share their thoughts, even if they seem “way out” or different from the opinions of others. When you set up the conversation that way, you are well on your way to a great interchange and much new learning for everyone.

Potential Pointer: Movies are a part of our lives, whether you watch several a week or haven’t been to the theater in years. Because movies provide a rich sensory experience of a story, they provide a wonderful platform to learn when you take the time to intentionally extract lessons from them.

How To Choose Movie In Netflix

There are many advantages and disadvantages to being a member of Netflix as with any other movie rental service. In my personal opinion, the advantages definitely over ride the disadvantages when it comes to Netflix. Being able to view more movies than I imagined is something I love about Netflix. So you may wonder why I think Netflix is so wonderful. Well, if you are considering joining Netflix, I will give you even more reasons in this article. Netflix has an astronomical amount of movies to choose from. Have you ever went to a movie store and walked around looking for a movie until you became utterly frustrated with the available selection? You would love to watch an interesting movie but aren’t having any luck finding one. Well, just think, if you join Netflix you can simply type in your title or complete a search, and your movie selection is right at your fingertips.

Netflix is very convenient and simple to use. By using this service, there are no trips needed to the movie store. The movies now come to me instead. Once I pick out the movies I want to watch, I have nothing else to do except wait for the movies to arrive in my mailbox. Netflix is very inexpensive in comparison to movie store rentals. If I were to rent as many movies at a movie store as I have at Netflix, I would go broke. I can watch more movies at an even lower price. Netflix permits you to enjoy a free trial period of 14 days. If you are not positive you want to join, you can take advantage of this free trial period. If after your 14 days you are not satisfied, the only thing you need to do is cancel your subscription.

By subscribing to Netflix, you are allowed to download movies onto your personal computer. Even more interesting, you can also purchase products which will allow you to stream movies directly to your own TV. By doing this, you have no waiting period. The only disadvantage is that the selection isn’t as vast (even though it is growing). I envision Netflix being the online movie download site in the future. Your movies will arrive very quickly when renting from Netflix. Netflix now has 47 shipping centers within the United States. Typically, you should receive your movie within one business day. This is much faster than other movie rental services on today’s market. Have you ever rented movies and realized that one of the movies had a particular scene missing? Well, that’s because you just watched an edited version of that movie. Netflix never edits any of their movies. All of their movies are always unedited.

Netflix is also a social network. In a way, it is kind of like MySpace, but for movies instead. You can view what other movie lovers are watching, you can connect with other lovers of movies, and make suggestions, etc. Access to other movie lovers is right at your fingertips. Netflix takes your children into consideration. Your children can log in to Netflix and select the movies they would like to watch. After that, the parent can then block or edit the types of movies selected. This is a wonderful prevention tool in keeping children from watching inappropriate movies. You will never pay a late fee with Netflix. You never have to worry about your movie being returned on time. You can keep your movie for as long as you would like. While Netflix doesn’t claim to be perfect, it is still one of the largest movie rental services on the market. If you are thinking about joining Netflix, I certainly hope this article assisted you with seeing how fun and convenient. Netflix can really be. Just think, your movies could actually be in your house tomorrow by joining Netflix today.

Secret Of Movie Rating

Movies are a favorite past time for the young and old alike. The smell of buttery popcorn, the thrill of watching a movie on a big screen, engulfed in sound and sharing the experience with a crowd is all an exciting part of going to the theatre. Watching a movie in the home cuddled up with a loved one is a great relaxing quality past time. Movies have been in our lives for a long time, but when you have children, you may start questioning what is appropriate and what isn’t. Imagine the horror of a supposed family movie that turns into a hurry up and turn it off. Not a fun way to spend the evening. That’s why movie ratings are so important.

The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) came up with a rating system to let individuals know what is appropriate for which age group. The President of the MPAA does not vote over the ratings, but chooses the thirteen members that sit on the Rating Board. These members all have parenting experience so they are able to make an appropriate decision. They then watch each movie and discuss the rating accordingly. Once the movie is rated, the decision is given to the producer with an explanation of why the movie was rated the way it was. If the producer does not agree with the decision, he can re-edit the movie and resubmit it or he can appeal the rating.

What are the ratings? Here is a quick run-down.

G is for General Audience. There is no violence, no nudity, no strong themes and the movie is appropriate for young children. It does not indicate the movie is a children’s movie. These movies are generally appropriate for all audiences and make great family nights. PG is for Parental Guidance and means that there is some brief nudity, some profanity and violence. There is no drug use in a PG film, but parents may find it inappropriate for young children.

PG13 is Parents Strongly Cautioned. These movies may contain strong language, nudity, drug use and are not recommended for children under the age of thirteen. Rated R movies are Restricted. This means children under 17 need an adult present to watch the film. These movies contain sexual content, prolonged drug use, extreme violence and profanity. Movie theaters and stores will generally not allowed children under eighteen to purchase or view these movies.

NC17 movies used to be rated X and contain adult content and themes and are not appropriate for children. It does not indicate that the movie is obscene or pornographic. It does mean that the movie is more adult oriented than a rated R movie.

Foreign films can also be rated using this system. It is not mandatory for any movie to be rated under these guidelines, however most theaters will not show a movie unless it’s been rated.

Movie ratings are important to understand as they can help decide which movie your child can watch with his friends and which movie is best for the entire family to watch. It is important to discuss movies and movie ratings with your children so they understand that even when they are away they should not watch these movies.

Movies For Hangover

There are many strategies to surviving a hangover: find and devour satisfying food, remain horizontal for the majority of the day, avoid bright light, to name a few. Among the most fulfilling things you can do to counteract a killer hangover is watch a movie. Wrapped up in your coziest digs, warm in bed, watching a movie can be one of the best hangover cures out there.

A great way to pass the time and escape the horrors of your current reality, we highly suggest this hangover recovery activity no matter the degree of your suffering. It is important, however, to choose wisely when it comes to film selection. What may be your favorite sober movie could set a disastrous downward spiral into motion, sending you deeper into the inevitable depression that comes along with being hungover. Fear not! We’re here to help you in the selection process.

Movies to Avoid When Hungover

Before we get to the best in post-hammered cinema, let’s talk about what to avoid when choosing a hangover flick. Do not, under any circumstances, watch a movie that contains any of the following plots:

Party Movies – usually a hilarious way to live vicariously through someone else’s drunk adventure, watching movies that include party scenes are a surefire way to turn your stomach. One look at Jonah Hill’s laundry-blue tinted mouth full-o-beer in Superbad will almost definitely send you over the edge.

Complicated Movies – twists and turns can be the most exciting and interesting parts of a movie when you’re feeling good. When hungover, avoid any movie that makes you think harder than “ginger ale or gatorade?”. You’ve already been nursing the aspirin bottle all morning. If you choose to challenge yourself to figure out what the hell is really in the box at the end of Seven, you’re running the risk of legitimate brain explosion. The simpler the better.

War Movies – often times hard enough to watch on your best day, war movies are straight up brutal when you’re hungover. Not only are the characters out there serving their country, being all “America’s finest”, which can make you feel like more of a loser, but the gore factor is dangerous territory. The only blood you’re going to want to see on a caveday is the delicious cooked kind dripping from your medium-rare cheeseburger.

Movies with a Homeless Protagonist – Do not, we repeat, DO NOT, make the mistake of choosing one of these Debbie Downers when hungover. Chances are, you already feel shitty enough. You’re struggling. Press play on Basketball Diaries you’re pretty much asking for a meltdown.

We have determined the worst possible movie to watch when down-for-the-count: The Wrestler. Talk about a “feel awful” movie experience. Mickey Rourke’s character is so broken, so busted, drunk, high, down and out, viewing this when hungover will surely make you feel 100 times worse than you already do. Not to be a spoiler (let’s be honest, you’ve had a few years to catch up at this point, folks), but things don’t even remotely work out well in the end. Let’s be honest. The Wrestler is a great movie… to kill yourself to.

Hangover Movie Criteria

Alright. Now that you’re schooled in what not to watch when hungover, let’s talk about what we’re here to highlight – the best movies to watch when hungover. Qualifications for foolproof, good-time hungover movie enjoyment include:

Movies You’ve Seen Before – a hangover is no time to try something new. You must rely on what you know to support you through this tumultuous time. Your go-to movies can build confidence, making you feel smart and comfortable in their familiarity. Sure, you’ve seen Karate Kid 6000 times. 6001 is most definitely the charm when you’re hungover.

Comedies – the most lighthearted, hilarious flicks you can find will surely comfort you on a caveday. Laughter is medicine. As you purge the poor choices of last night, go ahead and laugh away your sorrows with a good old fashioned funny movie.

Animated Movies – How can you go wrong here? You can’t. Kids’ movies are made to make you feel good, and they’re never going to push you over the edge in terms of being too sad or scary. Often times fantastical, kids’ movies are a great way to escape into another world for a couple of hours. You’re also most likely not making a huge time commitment with these films, so take advantage of your attention span mirroring that of a 5 year old and indulge in something silly and sweet.

Recommended Hangover Movies

Based on this criteria, we present to you, “The Four Horsemen of Hangover Movies”.

1. The Hangover – what a gift to hungover-kind. Hilarious at every turn, The Hangover reassures you that no matter how terrible you’re feeling in this hungover moment, it’s not nearly as bad as these guys have it. You can relate to their perils, yet feel proud that even though you left your cell phone in the cab on the way home, you still have all your teeth and the closest tiger is still safe at the zoo. Despite being sort of a movie about drinking, there are essentially no drinking scenes in the entire movie, so your gag reflex can relax.

2. Iron Man – this flick touches upon many of our good-choice criteria. Derived from a comic book, you can tap into your childhood while marveling (yup, we said it) at the coolest modern day special effects. The fast paced action will keep you occupied while the over the top nature of the plot, gadgets, and fight scenes won’t possibly make you feel like you’re inadequate; no one’s as smart as Tony Stark.

3. Monsters, Inc. – though probably not something you watched as a kid yourself, this movie is an amazing way to nestle into the comforts of childhood cinema. It’s stunning to watch, as is the trend with Pixar’s masterful films. It’s hilarious yet touching, super cute and completely imaginary, so you can truly escape real life for a bit. Relax and enjoy (and maybe check your closet real quick on your way back to the bed, just to be safe).

4. Big Trouble in Little China – martial arts movies have been proven to have a profound effect on the biochemistry of the human brain when undergoing alcohol processing. The cheesy action combined with unprecedented dorkiness is both entertaining and confidence-building. We conducted a double-blind case study testing this theory. A control group was compared to subjects who had watched various martial arts movies during their hangover process. The results were profound. The most potent movie for hangover assistance turned out to be Big Trouble in Little China, the aka the “Godfather of Garbage”.

In conclusion, when you’re feeling like the sober world is crashing down around you, a movie can be a great way to check out and feel safe. By following our do’s and don’ts you’re sure to have a pleasurable viewing experience. Prep something tasty, prop up a few extra pillows and let yourself be immersed in a blissful, semi-comatose viewing state of being.

caveday • / kav-da / • noun: A day of which activity is minimized due to the effects of a colossal hangover.

Everybody is familiar with Cavedays. You’re hungover. You hate yourself and your one-and-only plan for the day is to do everything in your power just to stay alive. Namely: nothing.

All About Romance Movie

Romance movies are timeless. Everyone has his or her favorite romance movie. Most of the time, the romance movies serve a purpose, mostly, as an escapism. One thing that these movies do is that they keep the idea of romance alive. No matter how happy or tragic the ending is, romance movies are loved by its viewers for entertaining them and keeping their dream alive.

It begs a question.. what makes a great romance movie? There are some actors and actresses who are great for romance movies and some who do not. There are some stories that are simply remarkable and there are some stories that make you wonder who made it the first place. I believe that there are at least four criteria of a great romantic movie

1. Likability of the Leads

First and foremost, the leads in the movie must be ‘likable’, meaning that the target audience love them and believe that they are lovers or can be lovers in real life. Which means that they must have chemistry between them. When the chemistry is there, it makes the interactions in the movie likable and believable. And it is important for the audience to like the leads for them to ‘get’ the movie.

This factor made Meg Ryan, the romantic comedy queen in late 80s / early 90s. Her two major performance in ‘When Harry Meet Sally’ and ‘Sleepless In Seattle’, paired with two great leading men, Billy Crystal and Tom Hanks, was a major tour de force. In both movies, she ‘clicked’ with both of them, which gave the movies critical and commercial success.

2. Simple And Clear Storyline

Another important criteria is the storyline. It has to be simple and clear, so that the viewer can understand what is going on in the movie, which means, who are the parties in love and what is the situation. Romance movies are not good grounds to do plot twist and turns as it will turn off the viewers as it will interfere with the viewers enjoyment of the romance. An example of good storyline was the movie adaptation of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, in 2005. The movie did an excellent job in portraying the romance of Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Darcy, showing the ‘games’ that both played with each other till they eventually fell in love in the end.

3. Movie Location / Background

The role of the movie location and background is to support and enhance the romance movie. It is not very important but it does play a role. The background refers to the cast that surrounds the leads, for example, family members or office mate. The movie location refers where the movie is situated. Usually, it is the movie locations that spice up the romance. A good example of the movie background is the cast of Four Weddings and a Funeral. In the movie, Charles’ set of eclectic friends complimented his ‘adventures’ in pursuing Carrie. A good example of movie location would be the location of Venice and Positano in Only You, starring Marisa Tomei and Robert Downey, where it made the romance in the movie magical, with glorious location scenes, Italian language and songs.

4. Excellent Movie Song / Soundtrack

And finally, the killer criteria would be the song or soundtrack of the movie, as it enhances and reminds the viewer of the romance movie experience. Usually, it would be a pop song sung by the popular artist and it becomes a chart topper. An obvious example would be the song “My Heart Will Go On” sung by Celine Dion from the movie Titanic. The song functions as a killer hook that drives the success of the movie and does help the commercial success of the movie soundtrack and movie itself. In the movie, the song typically appears either as a short music clip or becomes an instrumental background.

Well, those are the four criteria that I think makes a great romance movie. There might be others but these are the four main criteria and when all four criteria appear in a romance movie, it is almost certain that the movie becomes a commercial and critical hit.
